Spring Season 2013 Recap

This semester has not gone our way to say the least but we made the best of it. We added a new ergatta this year which was our first competition, which took place in Long Lake, MN at the Winter Wolf Howl Ergatta back in January. We brought home hardware in several categories and had some new PR’s take place on the team. This was great for the team since it was our first time doing this ergatta. We plan to be going back!

Spring Break
As usual we head down to Topeka, KS to row with Top Row. We were coached by Don Craig with getting help from Chris Anderson. As a team, we would like to thank everyone that helped us out on Spring Break. As usual we had two practices a day and went on nature walks. This year on Friday of Spring Break we got to go to Kansas University to have a little competition on the Kansas River. After a long scrimmage with KU we headed to the YMCA for one last time. Stories and memories were told at Coyote Canyon as we stuffed our stomachs. Spring Break this year will be remember for a long time.

Power Pull:
On March 23rd, we headed to Power Pull in Rochester, MN from Kailey's House, where her family was willing to let us stay and feed us. We are truly grateful of the Ganskop's for helping the team out! Thanks! The day started off slow as the high school rowers were competing first. Once our time came, we pulled hard and strong the whole 2k, with this determination people broke their own 2k times and some had personal best for the season. Almost everyone left with some hardware.

Here is our ladies showing off there medals. In the Novice Women's 2k: Haley Bagley took gold, Kailey Ganskop took Silver, and Susan Holker took Bronze. In the Experience Women's 2k: Jordan Ehlers took Gold and CJ Gallman took Silver.

We didn't get a picture of just the guys but in the Novice Men's 2k: Justin Gaytan took Gold and Jonathon Danielson took Silver. The Experience Men 2k Michael Wubbels took Gold.

To the right, is a team photo of everyone that made the trip to Rochester. Front Row: Megan Jones, Kailey Ganskop Second Row: Haley Bagley, Susan Holker, Jordan Ehlers, CJ Gallman, Michael Hansen Back Row: Jonathan Danielson, Michael Wubbels, Justin Gaytan

Million Meter Challenge

It a long tough journey but once you pull those last few pulls you know that all the pain and sweat was worth it. This year we had two Novice Justin Gaytan and Haley Bagley and along with Jordan Ehlers finish the Million.

Tanks at the U of M

Since the weather didn't work out with us to travel or to host Husky Sprints this year. We met up with Macalester Rowing Team to take advantage of the Tanks at the University of Minnesota. Where we got time in the tank and some water time. We got some great pointers from there coaches to help us out.

Here is our new E-Board for 2013-2014:

President: Luke Harren

Vice-President: Kailey Ganskop

Treasurer: Cassie Milhon

Chief Rigger: Jon Danielson                                                     Fundraiser Chair: Annie Kunstleben

A huge THANK YOU goes out to everyone who supported us during our annual 48 hour erg-a-thon!

Nickname: Cassie is a nickname. My actual name is Cassandra.
Year: Junior

Years on the team: Two

Favorite Erg Piece:
--I like the days where we have partners, one runs while the other ergs, and then you switch off. Circuits are good as well.

Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--Breath.
--How badly do you want it.
--We’re walking on them.

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--It’s a toss up between two. One would be when Mike Steinman and I rowed the double at Des Moines. The water was so good and we had great timing and balance, one of the best rows I have ever had. The other would be on the last day of fall practice when Mike Wubbels and I almost sunk the catch boat. After Wubbels had stopped the boat from spinning uncontrollably and I was pulled back into the boat, we started to bail water out with our hands and almost made it back to the dock without anyone seeing. But Mike Denucci and Mike Hansen both came down the stairs at that exact moment. Still rowed after that too. Let’s just say lesson learned. Do NOT put the boat into full throttle with a 200 lb. man in the front.

What is your favorite type of wood?
--My favorite wood would either be Purple Heart because how cool is it that there is purple wood or Cedar because it has a fantastic smell. Combine the two and you have a winner. Ding Ding!

 Favorite Erg Piece:
--Does game day count? I always enjoyed 2k time trials.  Short enough that you were not far from being finished but they always managed to hurt!

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--Two of them: Heading down to Topeka for spring break.  You always seem to learn something new when you spend 10 hours in the van with your friends and teammates.  It was also fun to get to know Nature Bruce and learn from Don Craig.  Also, flipping a single less than a foot from the dock was a pretty humbling experience.
- Getting the pair out on the river whenever I got the chance.  To this day, I still believe that there is nothing quite as relaxing as quietly gliding up the Mississippi while watching campus go by out of the corner of your eye.

Favorite Erg Piece:
--30 min relay

Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--Drop the bomb (Natalie)
--Grip it and rip it, anything said by Mike DeNucci, Mike Steinman and Michael Hansen....

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--My favorite rowing memory thus far would have to be Omaha my novice year.  DeNucci put me in the Pair with him for a 2k and we didn't get any chance to practice it.  Our warm up was my first time in the Pair period and DeNucci's first time in it that season.  We almost flipped right off the dock thanks to a devilish bolt snagging itself on the dock.  After that we straightened our selves out, got to the start, and raced.  We past boat after boat after having a slow and rocky start.  All in all we came in 3rd place after a strong finish.

What is your all-time favorite cereal?
--Reese Puffs!

Favorite Erg Piece:
--None! They're all terrible! I liked the relays on the ergs.

Favorite Coxswain Calls:
--Tatty's DRIVE! DRIVE! DRIVE! ...it haunts my dreams...
Favorite Rowing Memory:
--There are so many! I LOVED spring break and Don Craig, even when he called me "Lard ass" and told me to go weigh down the front of the catch! I also loved starting the Husky Sprints back up after a few years off, and the gorgeous weather we had the first year, then crazy snow storm the next year. My all-time favorite, though, was probably the entire year we had the entire floor of an apartment building filled with crew people...so many fun times!

Favorite Cereal:
--I'm not a huge cereal eater, but I do love me some fruity pebbles

Feeatured Rower | Haley Bagley

Nickname: I've been called Stretch...and Captain Hook after the clock incident.
Year:...little kid.
Hometown: Born in Kansas City Missouri, but I've been in St. Cloud for 12 years.
Major:...well I'm a little kid...so I think I'm going into Kinesiology next fall.
Years on the Team: Novice!
Favorite Erg Piece:
--During the Million I did a lot of 10ks and I broke it up into 1500, 3500, 3500, 1500 and it wasn't too shabby. I also like circuits!

Favorite cox'n calls:
--The women's eight at Quad and Rock, Mike Steinman was coxing and he said "you ladies say you pull like men, show me that power now!"

Favorite Rowing memory:
--Over spring break I was thrown in the double with Hansen one day and Kailey the next day. Hansen was a wonderful teacher and really helped me start to understand the technique. Then, the next day when I was rowing with Kailey we got some great strokes in and I felt the boat lift out of the water and glide, all the time with Don Craig yelling "early 90's, early 90's!". It was fantastic.

If I could row anywhere in the world and why?
--I would probably be rowing on the lake my cabin is on, 10 Mile. It's always glass in the morning and it's big enough that you could get a good work out in. If we're gonna get exotic I'd love to row off the coast of Fiji or in the Venice canals.

Favorite Erg Piece:
--One of the best workouts ever is the 5k erg/stair partner relay that Colton created and some of my fondest ergging memories come from 30min pieces with DeNucci while we were doing the Million Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--Droppin' Bombs!- Natalie.
--In 5 strokes you're gonna surge to the finish!- best part of any race

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--First time I understood a ratio shift (mixed 4 with myself, K Byrd, Hansen, and Collin with the Natalian Stallion Coxing). First time in a racing single on Lake Shawnee. I have many warm fuzzies when I think of rowing the Mixed Double with Schmatt McCann and all the hours I spent ergging with DeNucci chasing the Million. But ultimately my fondest memories aren't necessarily rowing related, they just happen to involve my friends and family that I met through this wonderfully dysfunctional team. All the inside jokes and embarrassing stories we share, all the crazy theme parties and stumbling home from the Press, Winter Banquets, Wine and Cheeses, Hot seats and naked van rides, Gin Buckets and Game Days, Floor Hockey, Rowing vs Pacific Wok Football, 6am Ultimate Frisbee, and many a night sitting in a friend's apartments just shooting the shit. It's no secret that the vast majority of my friends from college were met through the Rowing Team. Thank you everyone for fond memories! If you could row in any place in the world, where would it be? and why?
--Rowing in Oklahoma City at the Night Sprints would be pretty surreal. Lake Shawnee will also always hold a special place in my heart. I love the "Best Rowing Water in America." Topeka, America.

Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--Cut the Cake, A.K.A.  "HOLD MY D***"

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--Being out on the water everyday. Also, more specifically riding with Natalie in the car and getting hooked on dub-step.

If you could get an unlimited supply of one thing, what would it be? Why?
-- Money!!!!!!!!!!  I would be able to do the things I love to do without the stress of being broke.  College is getting more expensive every year as tuition is increased, and taking out loans knowing you have to eventually pay it all off is stress on stress.  It would also be nice if I could help out people in similar situations and who are not fortunate enough to get a jump start on life.

Nickname: Dilly
Year: 2007
Hometown: Clinton, WI
Major: Pro-flight aviation
Years on the team: 2004-2007

Favorite Erg Piece:
--I liked when we would divide up into teams and do erg relay pieces.
Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--Anything Tattoo would say! Is that weird that I still think of Tattoo and "DRIVE" during sex? It probably is.
Favorite Rowing Memory:
--Wow, sooooo many good memories. If I had to pick just one, I would pick the naked van. We drove Kimmy's van to a regatta and the AC didn't work. As the trip wore on, clothes wore off until everyone in the van was in their underwear, it was ungodly hot. Truckers loved the rowing team...

If you could travel to any country, which one would it be? and Why?
--Mmmmm....maybe Cambodia. Southeast Asia is awesome! Cambodia is someplace that people always recommend that is kick ass! It is cheap, beautiful, great food, and not very touristy. My kind of place. :)

Parting thought:
--Rowing 'made' my college experience. It is one of the best things I have ever done.

Major: Ecology and Field Biology (I want to major in Zoology but State doesn’t have it)
Years on the team: first year

Favorite Erg Piece:
--Interval piece with 1000 meters at 5k split plus ten seconds, 500 meters at 5k split, and then the last 500 meters at 2k split. I also really like rotation pieces, like the Don Craig.

Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--Feel that run under the boat! We’re flyin! Drive with those legs, Push!

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--Scrimmaging at KU during spring break. I did a women’s novice four with Haley, Kailey, and Megan with CJ coxing. Our set felt so great and everything was together. Definitely felt the run under the boat! I also got to cox my first race there in a bow coxed men's four, it was so much fun.

If you could travel to any country, which one would it be? and Why?

--Germany because there is a lot to explore and it is where I trace back my family roots, from both sides. It would be cool to learn some family history there. I also have a really good friend that lives there, so of course I have to visit him.

Years on the team: 2004-2008, men's captain sophomore and junior years.

Favorite Erg Piece:
--Pyramids where we'd do 500m, 1,000m, 1,5000m, 2,000m, 1,500m, 1,000m and 500m. That always beat me up pretty well. I also remember Erg Baseball being "fun."

Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--Anytime Tattoo (Jason Briant) yelled "Drive!" during a race.

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--Hard to narrow it down to just one, but a few come to mind....
**Mixed open 4 at 2006 Quad Cities with Alissa, Maggie, Simpson and myself rowing and Kimmay coxing. Amazing row from everyone involved and I recall we took first by like 30 seconds or so. Plus any race that involves throwing Kim in the water afterward is a good race indeed.
**Setting a 2K PR and finishing second at the 2006 Twin Cities Indoor Rowing Championship two days after spraining my ankle.
**Flipping a racing single at spring break freshman year and getting the fire department called on me.
**Any crew social gathering that involved the words "hot seat" or "OLSCM."
**Any practice that didn't involve virtual rowing

Favorite Cox'n Calls:

--Denucci, my first race novice year, "rage and serenity"/ or Kelly and Jennina and Maren, a friday practice of fall Novice year, it was a novice Men's 8 and the Jokes between the ladies about the smell of Mayonnaise was so ridiculous that we hardly rowed because nobody could keep it together.

Favorite Rowing Memory:

--Novice year at De Pere, where Kalie and Kim came up with the nickname "Big daddy"  for me.

What would be in the greatest ice cream sundae?

--It would consist of a Johnson, a dinghy, riggers, parts of random boats, pieces of shit, and covered in Camouflage.

Nickname: I don't think anyone gave me one. Some people called me Chad Kroger...
Year: I was on the team in 2009, I transferred to the U of M.
Hometown: St. Cloud!
Major: It was art, I am now studying architecture.
Years on the team: One year and I truly miss it. They were my family.

Favorite Erg Piece:
--I don't recall what it was named, but Kayla Byrd and I got partnered up and we had to do a 10k erg piece, while one partner would run then switch off. No big deal, but we dominated our competition!

Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--I loved doing oar to the gunnels or ten and glides, so maybe that moment they say "glide" and then it is complete silence...

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--Rowing at the Annual Great Plains Rowing Championships in a four. The boat was in sync and the oars were perfectly off the water. You just knew it was a great race before you even finished.

What is your favorite type of shoe and brand?--Adidas Samba

Other information:
--I will always remember rowing with SCSU. I have been working on getting back out on the water, I am hoping to join up the local city team this summer, anyone else want to join in??? Otherwise, I will always be looking for a personal shell to fix up.

Nickname: Sexy Nick
Year: Freshman
Hometown: Rosemount
Major: Computer Science
Years on the team: First year!

Favorite Erg Piece:
--It was a partner 2k and Mike Steinman and I were together. We had to do a sea-saw motion and the couple that received the most synchronized time won. Obviously we won.

Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--Mike Steinman: DON'T LET THEM CATCH US!

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--Rowing for the first time ever and it was a novice mixed 8. We we the odd ones out. The practice leading up to the Regatta was rough. Everyone in the boat had the heart to perform, but not the experience. During the race some how for at least 30 seconds during a power ten, it felt like we were lifted out of the water. That is the best feeling that any rower could experience. We earned first place that day.

What is your favorite type of shoe and brand?
--Heelys

Favorite Erg Piece:

--30 minute relay, circuits, or the Don Craig workout.

Favorite Cox'n Calls:

--Drive!
We’re walking on them!
Drop bombs in the water! -Natalie

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--There are so many! Aside from watching the Captaraptor sprint across a distant field towards its prey, morning practice this past fall Renee and I rowed the double to practice for our race the following weekend. The set, timing, and water were perfect. We even had the early 90s and quick arms away down. That was the smoothest and best row I ever had.

Each year spring break is also amazing with all of the team bonding time both on and off the water. The women’s experienced quad that Myself, Kelly, Natalie, and Maren rowed during last year’s break was also a favorite.

What is your favorite brand and scent of dish soap
--Gojo Orange

Featured Alumni Rower | Jason Kilby

Hometown: Halbur, IA
Major: Social Work
Years on the team: 1993/94, 1995/96

Favorite Erg Piece:
--I vaguely recall Ergs......Just kidding, these were located in a blown up racket ball court and required a map and sobriety to find.  We used to step out for a smoke in between time trials, and then generally vomited afterwards.

Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--Not sure, she just yelled a lot!  Seems like we were always doing Power 10's.

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--Wine and Cheese party's, Champagne breakfast courtesy of Coach John,  repairing boats under the bleachers, the crew camp out.  Nothing like the first time on the river in the spring and early morning rows with fog on the river. Running the bridges.

What is your favorite brand and scent of dish soap?
--Dawn-regular

Other information:
--I was chief rigger one year, I tried unsuccessfully to repair the boat that got stuck on the damn dam a few years prior....I was a bit ADHD at the time.  My work area was under the bleachers.  It was hard to find a spot to work on a 40ft boat when living in a dorm.  I think I missed a meeting the next year and ended up getting elected president. I did get my red coat prior to my departure back to Iowa.

Fav. Erg Piece:
--40's followed by skull busters. :)

Fav. Cox calls:
--Cut the Cake, Power 10's (duh)

Fav Rowing Memory:
--This one is extremely difficult to pick, but I would have to say it would be my first spring break in Topeka. We had taken out my favorite boat, the quad, and I was placed in the bow. We were flying along lake Shawnee and Don decided to check on the other boats as we were doing so well. Not much later than Don leaving our stroke caught a ridiculous crab....that created a downward spiral to everyone but me? As we wre nearly 90 degrees on the water, Don comes high speeding over to us and takes one look at the display, and says "Kim, don't be the idiot that holds on...jump in!" We flipped a quad. not many can (or would) admit they flipped a nearly impossible boat to flip.
Among other memories: Nature Bruce's dog peeing on Blake's sleeping bag, being in homecoming court and explaining to the announcers that my fellow homecoming royal king, Dylan, was graduating with a degree in women's studies, becoming captain, beating Purdue at Tail of the Fox, my last row at the Husky Sprints.

Years on the team: This is my first year on the team

Favorite Erg Piece:
--I really like sprint pieces.  My favorite though is when we split into two groups, one started on the ergs and the other did abs, we did 2 rounds of a 5 minute piece and abs while we weren't on the erg.  The short endurance pieces are definitely my favorite and who doesn't like working on their abs a little?

Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--"Drive it with your legs" Megan

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--It was our last day of water practice and Megan and I were in a double and Cassie and Wubbs were in the catch boat.  Since it was our last water practice they had to use up the gas.  I remember they were messing around, we look over at them and the boat was pivoting in a wicked circle of death.  We saw a black circle next to to boat which we assumed was a log.  We later found out that Cassie was whipped out of the boat when Wubbs lost control of it.  It was very entertaining to see to say the least.

What is one T.V show you can't miss?:

Favorite Erg Piece:
--2k relays, always great competition and fun to compete it.

Favorite Cox'n Calls:
--I was a full-time cox so my favorite calls would have to be my own! I was well known for "Drive" probably the most famous or infamous call I used my freshman year..."Power Ten!" and "10 to wind, 10 to grind, 10 to find".

Favorite Rowing Memory:
--Too many to just pick one, but Mike DeNucci already gave one of them with the 400 meter sprint at Topeka my last race. I would have to say two other great memories both came at the Head of the Des Moines (one of my favorite courses to cox because of the windy river). First memory from Des Moines was fall semester of my first experienced year. We were racing a mixed eight and we were the last boat to start. We ended up passing every single boat that started ahead of us and finishing first by a good margin. Second memory from Des Moines was another mixed eight. Prior to leaving shore we heard the ISU coach bad mouthing our team...which only motivated us more. We started a few boats back from ISU and made it our goal to pass them. We did end up passing them on the final 500 meters right in front of everyone on shore, however no one in the boat believed we were catching them until we pulled up on their stern. When we got off the water, all the ISU coach could say was "good race" and look away in defeat. Priceless moment!
